Contests 4U

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Hosts Contest for Students to Lunch With Sharon Flake

In the spring of 2009, The Carnegie Library sponsored a writing contest in which students answered the question: What Does Your Face Say to the World?  Winners received a lunch with me as well as several of my novels. We had a blast eating at a local Ethiopian restaurant.  Gerald, an eighth grade student attending Pittsburgh Montessori (graduating in June) is the first place winner.  His work appears below.  Kudos to all who entered the contest, and a special congrats to the second and third place winners.

What Does My Face Say to the World?

That Look,

That special, happy, funny look I always have on my face.

I'm a very silly person.

People think.

Do they know who I am?

They must not, but it's ok.

I know, I know what's inside.

The truth...

only the deepest, most painful truth there is.

The only thing people say to get away from trouble.

When they think they'e escaped it...

they just only make it worse.

Do you know now what my face says to the world?

Well, don't judge a book by its cover.

My face is a lie.
